A vibrant hanging flower basket adorns a lamp post in downtown Auburn, New York, a common sight in the city's beautification efforts.

And then there were two. An Auburn-made product has advanced to the final stage in this year’s Coolest Thing Made in New York contest.

The EarthPlanter self-watering flower pots are made at Bo-Mer Plastics LLC in Auburn. The planters, which use a double wall system to separate a water reservoir that feeds the planting area, have been installed in over 2,500 cities and towns across the country, including many in Auburn’s downtown.

The EarthPlanter is competing against Corning Incorporated’s ULE (Ultra-Low Expansion) Glass. The glass was used to construct an 11-foot-wide, 1,500-pound glass mirror that was installed at the Vera C Rubin Observatory in Chile.

Voting for the final begins September 1.
