Auburn is moving the location of its annual tree lighting ceremony.
When the city holds its annual tree lighting ceremony on November 30 it won’t be held at City Hall; instead, it will be held across the street in the courtyard of the Equal Rights Heritage Center. Speaking on FLX Morning with Ted Baker, City Clerk Chuck Mason said the decision was made to get crowds off of South Street.
“[The] tree lighting ceremony this year is going to be held in the courtyard of the Equal Rights Heritage Center because we wanted to pull people out of the road. When we would hold the ceremony on the steps of City Hall, people would spill out onto the street and we want to get away from using the streets.”
Mason added that this year will feature a day full of activities.
Prior to the Auburn Downtown Business Improvement District’s 37th annual holiday parade, the heritage center will host family-friendly activities from 2:00-5:00p.
Activities include a holiday sing-along with Julie Howard and Mike Doyle, Royal Promises Frozen characters, Jeff the Magic Man, and 4-H family crafts.
The parade will begin at 5:00p on Genesee Street and finish at City Hall.

Following the parade, at 6:00p, there will be musical performances by Genesee Street Voices and the Auburn High School Marching Band before the tree lighting. As is tradition, the mayor will be joined by Mr and Mrs Claus to light the tree.
