Auburn Police are warning of two scams targeting residents of the city and surrounding areas.
In the first scam, a picture is sent via email claiming someone has put a spyware app on your email. The person then claims to either have pictures of you doing inappropriate things or can watch you while you’re in your home. You are then given the choice to either pay the person a ransom through Bitcoin or have the photos sent to all your contacts.
In the second, you receive a text from individuals claiming to be the NYS Thruway Authority seeking to collect unpaid tolls. There will be a link to make a payment.
In both cases, you’re urged to not make any payments or open links received by text or email.
