It’s a swing and a miss for Auburn’s summer softball program.
The City of Auburn’s Parks & Recreation Department announced that it will not sponsor a summer softball program this summer. The department cited two key factors in its decision.
Firstly, the department cited the challenging budget anticipated for the 2026-27 fiscal year, causing the department to analyse the programs it offers for “associated cost versus benefit for our residents” to ensure fiscal responsibility for the programs it is continuing.
Secondly, the department said Auburn’s softball community has been steadily declining with fewer teams participating, adding that this downward trend is not just a local issue, but one being seen across the country, causing most municipalities to stop offering softball, with private leagues picking up the slack.
“With recreation choices more abundant for people, softball is not as popular as it once was,” the department stated in a release.
While the city won’t sponsor a softball program this year, Parks and Rec noted that private organizations or other groups can administer their own programs for those interested, with field rental available in the city.
“Softball has always been an important part of summer recreation in Auburn. It is our hope the local softball community will continue this tradition,” the department wrote.
