The public is invited to join members of Cornell’s South Central New York Dairy & Field Crops Team and other Extension professionals on Monday, June 30th from 6:00-8:00pm for a pasture walk and special topic presentations at Simme Valley Simmentals Farm, 6493 Stauber Road, in Groton, NY.  Owned and operated by Jeanne White, the farm has been breeding Simmental cattle, a dual-purpose Swiss breed, since 1972 using 100% artificial insemination for most years.
Owner Jeanne White and farm manager Phil Paradis will provide an overview of the farm and pasture system and lead the walk.  Betsy Hicks, Area Dairy Specialist with Cornell’s regional SCNY Dairy & Field Crops Team and Ron Kuck, Agriculture Program Educator with Cornell Cooperative Extension Cayuga County, will review pasture regrowth with test area at 2”, 4” and 8” cutting heights. Janice Degni, SCNY Team Leader and Field Crop Specialist, will discuss pasture plant identification.
When the group returns to the barnyard area, Dr. Adam Murray, Beef Extension Specialist with Cornell University, will talk about planning for vaccinations ahead of marketing calves and coordination with paddock moves. Jeanne White and Phil Paradis then will showcase the chute and handling system, and discuss the John May Farm Safety Fund.
This special pasture walk is hosted by Simme Valley Simmentals Farm, Cornell’s SCNY Dairy & Field Crops Team, and Cornell Cooperative Extension Cayuga County.  Admission is free, and there is no need to register.  With questions or for directions, please contact Ron Kuck, Agriculture Educator at CCE Cayuga, at 315-704-8810 or [email protected].
